The journey from Benidorm to Alicante on the Costa Blanca, along the south east coast of Spain, takes the visitor through some beautiful places along the coastal route. This is the coast of Murcia. The two cities are approximately 60 km apart and a direct journey takes around one hour and 20 minutes. There are regular buses and trains running between the two locations, although a more enjoyable way to travel is with a hire car, stopping off at the many scenic spots along the way.
The direct route can be taken on the Autopista AP7. 10 miles south west of Benidorm is the town of Villayosa, known locally as the pearl of the Mediterranean. It holds several Moor and Christian festivals throughout the year and with its small fishing harbour it is one of the most picturesque towns in the area. With 12 km of coastline, Villayosa has 3.5 km of blue flagged beaches, including Playa del Centro and El Parais, with several coves lapped by clear water. The fishermen`s properties are painted in pretty pastel colours and the town still retains its ancient walls. As well as a chocolate museum the town boasts an archaeological and ethnological museum as well as the Roman tower of St Joseph. There is a pretty promenade along the sea front, ideal for relaxing and enjoying the view. Located only 9 miles from Alicante is El Campello, which retains its old town as well as the newer developments that have arisen to accommodate tourism. Here the town hall frequently holds fine art exhibitions in the House of Culture. The port area is very attractive with a promenade lined with tempting seafood restaurants and a stunning view across the Mediterranean. There is a narrow gauge railway that leaves El Campello heading north to Calpe and Denia which lie beyond Benidorm. There is a small island connected to the town by a narrow isthmus, where the visitor can explore the archaeological remains from Iberian, Roman and Islamic times. Also in the area are the Canelobre Caves at 700 metres altitude with the largest stalactites and stalagmites in the Costa Blanca.
The city of Alicante has its own elegant charm, with many terrace cafes, wine bars, a marina and wide pavements lined with palm trees. The castle of Santa Barbara is a 9th century building that is worth visiting while in the city. There are two international airports which serve the Murcia coast of Costa Blanca. Alicante Airport is busier than Murcia and better located for access to Benidorm and beyond, although Murcia airport is also well located if the visitor wishes to discover more of the Costa Blanca which lies south east of Alicante. There are frequent flights from most major UK airports to both locations throughout the year. A great way to travel along the coastline is to hire a car and travel independently, stopping off overnight along the way. Accommodation ranges from luxury 4 and 5 star hotels to studio apartments and villas with private pools. For a great choice in cheap car hire Murcia and Alicante airports both offer reasonable rental rates.
